South Korean automotive trim molder opening plant in Georgia to supply Kia

2010-07-19 15:22:07

South Korean automotive supplier Hanil E-Hwa Co. Ltd. will invest $8.45 million to start a factory in Georgia to injection mold door trim, painted interior door parts and wheel caps for the new Kia Motors Corp. plant, Georgia officials said.

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue announced the news July 15. Hanil E-Hwa will create 173 jobs over the next three years, he said. The company will locate in a 173,354-square-foot building in LaGrange, Ga., in western Georgia, near the Kia assembly plant.

The governor’s office said the injection molding should begin production in October. The plant will start with three injection presses -- one with clamping forces of 2000 tons, and two 850-ton presses, according to an official of the Korean supplier's other U.S. operation, Hanil E-Hwa Interior Systems Alabama LLC in Selma, Ala.

The company plans to expand the Georgia plant to seven presses.

Hanil's plant in LaGrange will supply Kia only, while the Selma plant supplies Hyundai, according to the official.

Kia held grand opening ceremonies at its assembly plant in West Point, Ga., in February. Both Kia and Hyundai Motor Co.’s 5-year-old factory in Montgomery, Ala., have attracted many suppliers — establishing a U.S. center of car production for South Korean automakers.

Gov. Perdue said Kia and its suppliers have created nearly 3,000 jobs in the region.

Georgia’s Quick Start workforce training program will help Hanil E-Hwa prepare new employees for work at the LaGrange factory. The state provides the training for free, as an incentive for companies to create new jobs.

“We are excited to expand our U.S. operations, and take advantage of the highly skilled workforce in the region to create meaningful opportunities in this community and better serve our customers," said Yang Suk Ryo, a representative of Hanil E-Hwa.

The Seoul-based Hanil E-Hwa makes automotive trim, such as door and pillar trims, head liners, package trays and shelves, and seating assemblies.
