Colortronic helps Nampak reach rHDPE milk bottle goal

2010-03-09 10:59:48

Colortronic (UK) says it has supplied materials handling systems to Nampak Plastics Europe to allow inclusion of recycled HDPE into the rigid packaging company’s HDPE containers.

The ancillaries group said: “This equipment – designed, installed and serviced by Colortronic (UK) Ltd – was supplied to several UK Nampak sites as part of the milk road map project. Working closely with Nampak, Colortronic supplied the systems on time, providing a simple and reliable changeover while ensuring downtime of the hole in the wall operations were kept to an absolute minimum.”

In a previous statement, Nampak said it has invested in excess of £1.5m across its seven sites in the UK. “As well as the overall development of the project, this investment has included modifications to the blowmoulding equipment including the installation of new blending machines, material pipework and new silos to enable the use of rHDPE,” it said.

Nampak had set itself a goal in 2010 for every HDPE milk bottle it produces to include up to 10% rHDPE. It said it produces approximately two billion milk bottles every year, meaning that approximately 7,000 tonnes of virgin material will be saved annually as a direct result of the change.

Devised as part of Defra’s Milk Roadmap, Nampak said its investment means customers such as Arla Foods, Dairy Crest, Robert Wiseman, Yeo Valley and Grahams will be using these recycled-content milk bottles for supermarket shelves.

Eric Collins, managing director at Nampak Plastics, said: “It’s a real team effort by everyone at Nampak, along with our customers and other key stakeholders, to have reached this goal. It is also extremely satisfying to know that every single one of our bottles now has recycled content.

“Replacing virgin material with recycled content in our milk bottles is also a significant contributor to Nampak’s continued drive to reducing its overall carbon footprint further still.”
