Sweden-based pipe manufacturer KPS says it has approval to supply the first ever plastic pipes used in German petrol stations.
KPS sales and marketing director Frekrik Hellner says permeability standards are much stricter in Germany than the European standard, meaning KPS had to create pipes, which connect the petrol dispenser to the tanks on the forecourt, with zero permeability.
“German garages have only used steel pipes until now because of the strict regulations,” he told European Plastics News. “But because of the almost zero permeability of our pipes we expect them to be in place in German pilot sites in the next two to three months.”
The pipes are made of HDPE and have two liners, one made of EVOH and the other in polyethylene. They were approved this year by LAWA (Bund/Länder- Arbeitsgemeinschaft Wasser).
KPS says the German approval gives “an important message to other markets” that use steel pipes, such as Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
